Il report del Main Event e risultati finali della classe 450SX al termine della quarta prova del Campionato AMA Monster Energy Supercross 2017 sul tracciato di Phoenix, in Arizona.
MAIN EVENT Report
Molto bello e combattuto il Main event della classe 450SX. Nel lungo rettilineo di partenza, il pilota Monster Energy Kawasaki Eli Tomac riesce a scaricare a terrà tutta la ‘cavalleria’ della sua KX-F450 ufficiale ed ottiene l’holeshot. Anche il pilota Honda Justin Brayton scatta bene portandosi in seconda posizione. Seguono poi Ryan Dungey (Red Bull KTM), Malcom Stewart (Suzuki), Cole Seely (Honda HRC), Chad Reed (Yamaha), Davi Millsaps (KTM), Josh Grant (Monster Energy Kawasaki), Blake Baggett (KTM), Dean Wilson (Yamaha). Cooper Webb (Yamaha) è 11°. Partono male invece Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husquvarna) e Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) che si ritrovano rispettivamente 12° e 13°.
Già dai primissimi giri è ‘bagarre’: Stewart innesca un duello con Millsaps. I due si scambiano ripetutamente la posizione ma alla fine Millsaps, nella curva dopo il ‘finish line’, chiude il pilota Suzuki il quale urta la balla di fieno che delimita il tracciato e cade, perdendo così ogni possibilità di rimanere nel gruppo di testa; chiuderà la sua gara 14°.
Nelle stesse fasi di gara, prima Dungey e poi Reed sorpassano Brayton e si portano alle spalle del pilota HRC Seely. Anche nelle posizioni non di vertice si lotta in modo intenso e a mettersi in luce con dei bei duelli sono dapprima i compagni di team Baggett e Millsaps, in lotta per la sesta posizione; poi il terzetto Grant, Musquin e Webb in lotta per l’ottava piazza. I duelli vanno avanti per una serie di giri con i piloti che si scambiano ripetutamente le posizioni con sorpassi e contro sorpassi.
Il duello più entusiasmante di tutti, arriva però a metà gara quando Dungey e Reed raggiungono Seely. In un primissimo momento è Reed che sorpassa Dungey ma il pilota KTM risponde subito e si riappropria della terza posizione. Reed poi ci riprova con un bellissimo incrocio di traiettorie aereo nella parte finale della sessione ritmica ma il pilota KTM resiste e respinge l’attacco. La svolta arriva quando Dungey raggiunge Seely e i due cominciano a duellare; in quel momento è Reed a tirare fuori tutta la sua classe ed esperienza e con un sorpasso magistrale nella curva che segue la sezione ritmica, gli sorpassa entrambi in un ‘sol colpo’ e si porta in seconda posizione con il pubblico è in ‘delirio’.
Nel frattempo, in prima posizione, Tomac conduce una gara in solitaria. Quando è in serata, il pilota Kawasaki è imbattibile; guida bene e in scioltezza ed a pochi giri dalla fine, il suo vantaggio è di quasi diciotto secondi su Reed. Alle sue spalle le prime tre posizione sembrano oramai stabilizzate con Reed, Dungey e Seely. Dietro invece la lotta continua e alla fine Webb la spunta su Musquin e Millsaps ha la meglio su Brayton.
Il Main Event si chiude con la prima vittoria stagionale di un ritrovato Eli Tomac che dopo tre gare alquanto opache, ritrova la forma fisica ed anche il setting giusto per la sua moto e mette a segno una vittoria che sicuramente fa morale in vista del prosieguo della stagione. Secondo uno strepitoso Reed, al suo primo podio stagionale. Terzo Ryan Dungey, che si accontenta e non corre rischi. Chiudono la top five Cole Seely e Davi Millsaps. Gara nelle retrovie per Musquin ed Anderson, che terminano la loro gara rispettivamente 9° e°10°.
Concludiamo dicendo che, l’impressione avuta è stata che con l’assenza di Ken Roczen, tutti sembrano risvegliarsi e pronti a lottare per il titolo in un campionato che al momento sembra aperto a più pretendenti. Potrebbe anche essere che alcuni piloti, prima di trovare il proprio ritmo, abbiano bisogno di un po’ di ‘rodaggio’. Fatto sta che il Main Event di questa sera è stato entusiasmante e la vittoria del titolo per Dungey e tutt’altro che scontata.
Per ora Dungey (89) resta comunque il leader in classifica con un cospicuo vantaggio, seguito dal suo compagno di team Musquin (74). Tomac (69) balza in terza posizione a pari punti con Seely. Quinto è Millsaps (55). Più attardato Reed, settimo con 49 punti.
Attendiamo la prossima prova, che si terrà in California il prossimo fine settimana sul tracciato di Oakland, per capire se Tomac potrà davvero essere il nuovo avversario di Dungey e aspirare al titolo in questa stagione o se quella di Phoenix è stata per lui solo una serata particolarmente propizia.
