Il secondo round di diciannove della MXGP 2019, il Gran Premio della Gran Bretagna, si è svolto questo fine settimana sul tracciato del Matterley Basin.
Il bel circuito, situato nelle vicinanze di Wichester, ha accolto i piloti con un clima sorprendentemente mite, anche in questo periodo dell’anno e con temperature primaverili alla domenica. Antonio Cairoli ha dovuto affrontare durante l’intero weekend problemi alle braccia e alla spalla destra, rigida e indolenzita a causa di un piccolo incidente durante l’allenamento settimanale. Secondo nella sessione di prove libere, Tony ha centrato il terzo cancello per la gara di qualifica dopo la sessione cronometrata.
Poche curve dopo una buona partenza, è riuscito a passare in testa, conducendo fino all’ultimo giro, quando un piccolo errore gli è costato il primo posto finale. Secondo al cancello della domenica, Cairoli ha centrato l’hole-shot in gara uno, ma ha perso il comando quando Gajser lo ha superato durante il primo giro, riprendendolo durante il quarto passaggio, quando lo sloveno è caduto. Questo è stato il momento chiave della prima manche; Tony ha spinto a fondo, accumulando un vantaggio che ha potuto facilmente gestire fino all’ultimo giro, quando ha tagliato per primo il traguardo.
In gara due il pilota della KTM Red Bull Factory Racing Team ha centrato un altro hole-shot, ma Gajser lo ha superato, portando il distacco fino a sei secondi di vantaggio. Trovato un feeling migliore con il corpo e con la pista verso fine gara, il nove volte Campione del Mondo ha iniziato a spingere nuovamente negli ultimi quattro giri di gara, colmando il gap grazie ad alcuni incredibili giri veloci ma comunque troppo tardi per superare il rivale, passando sotto il bandiera a scacchi secondo, cogliendo così una fantastica vittoria di Grand Premio, la numero 87 della sua carriera. Cairoli mantiene la tabella rossa sulla sua KTM 450 SX-F con 97 punti, portando il distacco sul secondo pilota in classifica a 8 lunghezze. Prossimo appuntamento con la MXGP 2019 tra una settimana, sulla pista sabbiosa di Valkenswaard, per il Gran Premio dei Paesi Bassi.
Antonio Cairoli: “Questa è una delle mie piste preferite, ma sfortunatamente questo fine settimana non ho potuto spingere sin dall’inizio come volevo perché un piccolo incidente durante la settimana mi ha causato qualche problema al collo e alla spalla destra. Sono comunque felice della mia velocità, soprattutto nella parte finale delle gare, quando riuscivo a guidare più rilassato, ma all’inizio di entrambe le manche ho faticato a trovare il ritmo, soffrendo per le braccia dure dopo tre, quattro giri, dovendo fare molta attenzione a evitare ogni minimo errore che su questa pista può costare molto caro. La pista era insidiosa e sono stato molto attento ma alla fine ne è valsa la pena e sono molto contento di come è andato questo fine settimana. Spero di poter migliorare la prossima settimana nella sabbia, perché lì si sforzano molto la schiena e le spalle, ma spero di essere di nuovo al 100%. Sono molto felice per il campionato e questo è il nostro obiettivo e nel complesso sono super felice per il team e per KTM. Auguro tutto il meglio al mio compagno di squadra Prado, sperando che torni presto in pista. Voglio congratularmi anche con Tom Vialle per il primo podio della sua carriera nella sua prima stagione in MX2.”
TC222 – MXGP Round 2 – Great Britain
The second round out of nineteen of the MXGP 2019 took place this weekend on Matterley Basin track, for the Grand Prix of Great Britain.
The beautiful venue, situated near by Winchester welcomed the riders with surprisingly nice weather, even in this period of the year, with springtime temperatures on Sunday. Tony Cairoli had to deal during the whole weekend with arm-pump and with the right shoulder that was stiff due to a small crash during the week training. Second in the free practice session, Cairoli picked the third gate for the qualifying race after the timed session. The start was good and he was able to take the lead after a couple of corners, leading till the last lap, when a small mistake costed him the final first place.
Second on Sunday’s gate, Tony took an amazing hole-shot in race one but lost the lead when Gajser passed him during the first lap, passing him back when the Slovenian crashed during the fourth lap. That was the key moment of the first moto and Tony pulled then a gap that could easily manage till the last lap, when he crossed the finish line first. In race two the KTM Red Bull Factory Racing Team rider took another hole-shot but Gajser passed him, pulling the gap till six seconds of advantage. Finding better feeling with the body and the track, the nine time World Champion started charging in the last four laps of the races, closing the gap with some incredible fastest lap times but too late to move on the rival, passing under the chequered flag in second place for a fantastic Grand Prix victory, that is the 87th of his career. Cairoli keep the red plate on his KTM 450 SX-F with 97 points, bringing the gap on the second rider in the standings to 8 points. Next round of the MXGP 2019 in a week time, on the sandy track of Valkenswaard, for the MXGP of The Netherlands.
Antonio Cairoli: “This is one of my favorite tracks but unfortunately this weekend I couldn’t push as I wanted since the beginning because I had a small problem during the week and my neck and my right shoulder where a bit stiff. I was happy with my speed, mostly at the end of the races when I could ride more smooth but at the beginning of both races I struggled to find the rhythm. I get harm pump after three four laps and I had to really be careful to avoid any little mistake that on this track can cost you a lot. The track was very tricky and I was very careful and in the end it pays off so I’m really happy about this weekend and hopefully I can be better next week in the sand because we need to work a lot with the back and the shoulder and I hope to be again at 100%. I’m very happy for the championship and this is our goal and overall I’m super happy for the team and for KTM. I really wish all the best to my team mate Prado and I hope that he will be back soon on track. I also want to congratulate Tom Vialle for the first podium of his career on his first MX2 season.”
