When it comes to racing, Supercross is completely different than motocross. Motocross races are much longer and more demanding of man and machine. Not surprisingly, the physical and technical approach to each discipline differs greatly.

The technical approach
Because motocross features very high speeds (sometimes in excess of 70 mph) on extremely rough tracks, it’s important for bike setup to be much softer to enable the bike to move around and absorb rough chop and huge bumps.
However, it can be unnerving for riders who have spent the last five months riding extremely stiff and tight Supercross bikes to hop on something soft and loose. To combat this, teams will often slowly work their riders notch-by-notch into a proper setting for motocross.
Easing a rider back into the right setup doesn’t always guarantee success. In a sport where technological limits are always rapidly expanding, few things stay the same from year to year. Things like frames, engines, center of gravity, suspension and more are constantly changing. This means teams can’t always rely on data gathered the previous year, and must do plenty of testing before every season. Some teams get it nailed before the first race, while others don’t find the right groove until halfway through the season, if at all.
