Van de Moosdijk Injured at Markelo
In an unfortunate turn of events, only two-weeks before the first round of the EMX250 championship, ASTES4-Tesar Yamaha Official EMX250’s Roan van de Moosdijk broke his ankle while leading the ONK Dutch Motocross Championship. The injury happened on Sunday April 2nd at the circuit of Markelo in The Netherlands, while the fifteen-year-old sensation was leading the MX2 class. He caught his foot on a rutted jump face and twisted his ankle. The Dutch prodigy didn’t crash, but he instantly felt something was wrong and pulled out of the race to seek medical help.
Following a closer examination, the doctors have confirmed a broken Tibia which means he will miss the first half of the EMX250 season. As the 2016 Junior 125cc vice World Champion, Van de Moosdijk was considered one of the top challengers for the European EMX250 title and has already made a solid transition from the YZ125 two-stroke to the YZ250F four-stroke, “the step from the 125cc two-stroke to the 250cc four-stroke was really good for Roan,” Yamaha Motor Europe’s Off-Road Manager Erik Eggens said, “on all types of ground, both hard-pack, clay and soft sand. He had the same speed as some of the MX2 grand prix riders.”
As a result of this unfortunate news, making a full recovery is the main focus for van de Moosdijk who is expected to be in plaster for another 4-5 weeks before the injury and his return to racing is reassessed.
Roan van de Moosdijk: “I was having a good ride but I caught my foot on the jump and twisted my ankle. I didn’t crash but my ankle was broken. The doctor has said I need to be in plaster for 4-5 weeks and when everything is okay, I can start training again. I’m sad to have this injury, but luckily I don’t have any pain anymore so I am already looking forward to start riding again as soon as I can.”
Erik Eggens Yamaha Motor Europe Off-road Racing Manager: “When I heard the news that Roan had broken his leg, it wasn’t the best feeling. It’s a real pity for Roan, and for the team and for Yamaha as well. I know the team has been working really hard throughout the winter together with David Philippaerts and Roan had made a lot of progress. The step from the 125cc two-stroke to the 250cc four-stroke was really good and on all types of ground, both hard-pack, clay and soft sand. He had the same speed as some of the MX2 grand prix riders, so it was looking to a be a really promising season for him. Unfortunately, in motocross things like this happen, and now the most important thing is to see him get 100% fit and healthy before he makes his return. For now, he will follow the advice from the doctors with the support of the team, and of course David Philippaerts, where together they will decide the best recovery plan that will see him make a solid return. Roan is still young, this is just a small hurdle on his path to success, I am sure he will come back strong.”
Daniele Marchese ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha Official EMX250 Team Manager: “It’s unfortunate for Roan to have broken his foot like this. He didn’t crash, he only lost his foot on the jump. At the moment he will need to take 5 weeks to recover and then he can start rehab. We hope to have him back on the bike in June.”
